Rain on the Sea (Poem)

June 26th, 2008. Published under Poems, Travel. No Comments.

Rain on the sea,
The water in the breeze,
Watch it blow free,
The rain on the sea.

It slowly grows more,
The water more dense,
Slowly raining offshore,
That sound I adore.

Only a Submarine Will Wake You

June 25th, 2008. Published under Travel, Traveling. 1 Comment.

My mom’s friends had come from China, and we had taken them to Galveston to visit the island. One of the attractions that my mom really wanted to take us to was the Titanica IMAX movie at the Moody Gardens.

The Titanica movie was a movie that showed the discovery of the Titanic in it’s sunken place in the ocean. It was showed on one of the biggest screens in the world: a 6 story by 10 story screen. I couldn’t wait to see the movie.

We had arrived at Moody Gardens a few hours ago but they had told us the next showing for the Titanica movie was at 9’ o’clock at night. So we had grudgingly left, and now we were sitting in the gigantic room, waiting for the movie to begin.

Ambient music played in the background and dim lights shown on us as we got comfortable in the chairs. There were many rows of seats, but there were only around 20 people in this late showing of the movie. Each group got a row to themselves.

Two Small Jumps

June 24th, 2008. Published under Travel, Traveling. No Comments.

The guests who had landed in San Antonio on the airplane was safe and sound now, and yesterday we took them to Galveston, Texas to live in a large hotel called the Flagship Hotel.

This hotel is special in many ways mostly because it is actually on the water. It is built on a large pier, and looking outside of the window will give you an effect like you are in midair above the ocean.

Before we could check in, however, we had to eat dinner, and my mom chose a Chinese cuisine. When we were finished with the meal, they gave us fortune cookies.

The Brownsville Story: I - The One Who Loves Dolphins

April 16th, 2008. Published under Travel, Traveling. No Comments.

On the lower coast of Texas, where South Padre Island was, there was a dolphin watcher. Her name was Marg (not really). She loved the dolphins in the Gulf of Mexico, and her husband ran a dolphin-watching business.

We went dolphin watching with her for an entire day during my Brownsville spring break vacation.

This is her story, along with mine.

———-

“This is a stingray,” she said, pointing to a strange looking thing in an aquarium.

My parents, my aunt, my cousin, and another lady and a boy who would be traveling with us were looking through her Sealife Nature Center. Marg was the captain of the ship we would be going on this afternoon, as well as the founder of the Sealife Nature Center.

“You may not touch the stingray,” she said obviously.

The Brownsville Story: The Golf Carter

March 30th, 2008. Published under Travel, Traveling. No Comments.

This is me driving a golf cart!

Previous post in the series A Brownsville Story: Tricked.

continuing from previous post: As I was standing outside looking at the ducks, a golf cart zoomed by. I looked at the driver, who was wearing sunglasses and was deep in thought.

I didn’t even have a chance to think about something else when yet another golf cart whooshed by. Golf carts weren’t very unusual in a country club, but there were five people on a two-seating golf cart.

Apparently this family pushed things to the limit. What they were doing was highly dangerous. But what really caught my eye was the fact that a boy was driving. (more…)

The Brownsville Story: Tricked

March 29th, 2008. Published under Travel, Traveling. No Comments.

Part of the series A Brownsville Story.
Previous post in series: A Lesson Learned.

After I had calmed down, I went out for a little walk. Little walks almost always help.

As I was walking, I saw some pretty birds in a tree. There were so many pretty birds and ducks in Brownsville, and they’re great, just as long as you don’t

Just so long as you don’t get fooled by Derik when he points one out to you.

The next morning, Derik knocked on my bedroom door. I wanted to go out with him, but I was feeling horrible.

“Wanna come, sport?” He asked.

“I can’t,” I grumbled unhappily.

“Well, okay. Stay at home.”

When Jenny woke up, she came over to where I was sitting (on the couch, where I was resting). “Don’t worry about him. He’ll come back with the greatest shots in the world and everything.”

I half-believed it, but the other half wondered if it was true.

It was.

Trip: DesertFlight - Ernst Tinaja

December 13th, 2007. Published under Travel, Traveling, True Life. 1 Comment.

Chips of Rock

Bubump.

My dad had not apparently realized that I was almost scared to death sitting in the back of our rented SUV.

It was Day Three of our long trip to Big Bend National Park. On Sunday (Day Two), my dad had gone to the Visitor Center and asked for good places.

The ranger there told us several beautiful spots: Ernst Tinaja, Grapevine Springs, and the Santa Elena (we were going river rafting there).

Trip: DesertFlight - Raftin’ in the Rio Grande

November 30th, 2007. Published under Travel, Traveling, True Life. 2 Comments.

It was Wednesday, day five of my trip to Big Bend National Park. I looked on the big calendar I had hanging on the wall. It had everything we were doing.

Mostly it was just stuff like “Explore BBNP.” But today was special. There was nothing much on it: no back-road drives, no hotel moving, or anything like that.

There was only one thing marked in on that day. “Big Bend River Trip.”

Oh, yes. The special feature of the trip. We would be canoeing inside the Rio Grande / Santa Elena Canyon. Three miles up the river, and three miles back.
