A Big Loan

May 9th, 2008. Published under Philosophy, True Life. 2 Comments.

My mom’s friend was a very kind person. She helped many people, and really tried her best to do her part for the world.

She had a neighbor, who was a mother of a teenager. That teenager, a few months ago, had gotten into a bit of trouble. He had been caught drunk and in a car with a bunch of other drunk-friends.

He was sentenced to jail, but there was a large amount of money to pay. He could have bailed.

So he bailed. He came to my mom’s friend’s doorstep and asked for some money. A few thousand. Being a nice person, she immediately agreed.

He was to repay her in the next few months. But once again, he came again. He asked for more money. She accepted.

A few months later, he came back, asking for even more money. He explained that if he did not get this money, he would not be able to get a job and repay her.

Hopeless, she gave more money.

And so this repeated. The teen, now around twenty-something, owes her more than 30 thousand dollars. And all because of a single loan.

The boy’s mother regrets letting her give him money.

My mother’s soft voice came in as my mom’s friend finished her story. “It doesn’t mean to never let anybody borrow money, but to think. And to do things properly.”

Supposedly, my mom’s friend was going to talk to a lawyer and get the now-man to sign a contract stating the loan.

My mother nodded her head slowly.

I doubt the poor lady could get her money back. It looks like a endless hole.

A good story. Looks you’ve grown up enough to be stepping out of all those fine-ending fairy tales…

Like it or not, welcome to the real world.
